Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage
Which Is Right For You?
One of the first questions many people ask when approaching age 65 is: “Should I choose a Medicare Supplement plan or a Medicare Advantage plan?”
The answer is not as simple as choosing the better plan, because there is no universally better option.
There is only the option that best fits your healthcare needs, financial goals, lifestyle, and overall retirement strategy.
At Feliciano Financial, we believe Medicare decisions should never be made in isolation. Healthcare and Insurance choices directly affect retirement planning, retirement income affects your tax planning strategy, and taxes affect your overall cash flow. Everything is connected. That is why we help clients evaluate Medicare decisions through the lens of a comprehensive strategy rather than viewing them as insurance choices alone.
Comparing Your Options
Option 1: Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)
A Medicare Supplement plan generally works alongside Original Medicare and is designed to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses while providing broad provider flexibility. Under this structure, you can visit any doctor or hospital nationwide that accepts Medicare without network restrictions or specialist referral requirements.
While Medigap plans typically require a higher monthly premium, they offer greater predictability in medical costs and minimal copays or coinsurance when care is received. Routine dental or vision benefits are not included, and prescription drug coverage requires enrolling in a separate standalone Part D plan. Many retirees who travel frequently or split time between states value Medigap for its nationwide flexibility and predictable expenses.
Option 2: Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)
A Medicare Advantage plan serves as an all-in-one alternative offered by private companies approved by Medicare. These plans combine hospital, medical, and usually prescription drug coverage into a single plan, often including extra benefits like routine dental, vision, or wellness allowances.
Medicare Advantage plans typically feature lower upfront monthly premiums, but you pay copays or coinsurance as care is used, up to an annual out-of-pocket maximum. Care is delivered through specific provider networks (such as HMOs or PPOs), which means out-of-network care may cost more or may not be covered, and specialist referrals are often required depending on the plan. Some retirees appreciate these lower upfront costs and bundled convenience.
Key Questions for Your Retirement Strategy
Both approaches can make sense depending on your individual situation.
The real question is: Which approach best supports the retirement you want to live?
Questions we often help clients evaluate include:
- Do you travel frequently or spend time living in multiple states?
- How important is complete provider flexibility versus managed network care?
- Would you prefer predictable monthly costs or lower upfront premiums?
- How do potential out-of-pocket healthcare expenses fit into your broader cash flow strategy?
This is where the cost of disconnected decisions often appears.
A healthcare option that seems lower cost today may create coverage limitations later, while a plan focused solely on premiums might overlook provider access or travel flexibility down the road.
